Windsor u3a is inviting our members to join or start new Interest groups, including:
- the Backgammon group
- The Craft Room group
- the Collectables group
- the Disposables group
- a Beginner’s Chess group that needs more players
- see also; propose a new group and links to existing groups lists
NB The information shown below is provisional and may be subject to change when the new group’s members first meet to discuss arrangements for their regular meetings.
Backgammon
Backgammon is a skilful two-player board game. The earliest record of backgammon dates back to 17th Century England. Backgammon involves a combination of strategy and luck from rolling a dice. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced player, why not join the group to play this fascinating game. The group is just getting started and welcomes new members.
If you are interested in joining the new Backgammon Group, please contact Nina Farzam.
The Craft Room
The group invites sewist and crafters to participate in workshop days in Old Windsor. The workshops will be from 10am to 3 pm and you can bring a packed lunch. A picture of the project and a materials list will be sent out in advance telling you what you will need to bring. There is a limited number of places and will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
If you are interested, add your name to Craft Room group on Windsor u3a Beacon, or contact Beverley Ward.
Collectables
The purpose of this (probably monthly) group would be to bring together those members who collect things and would like to share their interests with other like-minded people. Collectables can be anything – Just things people collect.
The Interest group would be a vehicle to show, swap, sell, dispose of, or value items that members have collected over the years. The group would also swap information on public collectors’ fairs and web sites which cater for specific collectables.
For more information, please contact: Martin Pritchett.
Disposables
Have you ever said, “it’s a shame to throw this out, I wonder if anyone can make use of it?” Then this proposed new group may be able to help.
This initiative aims to create a platform for Windsor and District u3a members to offer unwanted items to other members free of charge. The concept is in early development, a Convenor (and better group name!) is needed to help establish the group.
For more information, please contact: Mo Salter, Groups Coordinator.
Chess – Beginners
A few members have shown interest in starting a Beginner’s Chess Group but need more players.
If you would like to try it out, please contact Mo Salter.

Do you have an idea for a New Group?
You may find useful information (or new ideas) on the Third Age Trust’s Subject Advisers page, which covers over 70 different topics. If the advice provided on their topic pages is insufficient for you, some advisors are receptive to e-mail or telephone queries, while others offer a regular newsletter service to provide ongoing ideas and support.
Please remember that everyone in Windsor u3a is a volunteer, we hope you will play a role in creating, if not running, the group yourself. The benefit for you will be identifying members who share your love of the activity and making new friends. Help is available, initially from our Groups Coordinator, Mo Salter.
We learn from and with each other, no ‘teachers’ and ‘pupils’ here, it is all very sociable.
If you can ease the running of any groups you attend by helping the host/convenor in any small way, please do so. The more you contribute, the more you will get from the u3a. We can no doubt all say “we worked hard all our life, now it’s time to relax”, but if you do that, you will be missing out.
Please e-mail your suggestion to Mo via newgroups@windsoru3a.org.uk with your full name and a phone number.
Mo Salter, Groups Coordinator
