Lord Lieutenants of Berkshire by Dr Peter Durrant
In 1545 Henry VIII appointed Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk as his Lieutenant for the Southern Counties. His role then was to co-ordinate local defence against threats of French invasion. Defence remained the main duty of the Lord-Lieutenants right up to the last years of Queen Victoria’s reign. Nowadays the role is more concerned with encouraging and celebrating public and local service.
Dr Peter Durrant was County Archivist of Berkshire for 25 years and is now Deputy Lieutenant of the County. He will tell us about some of 41 men and one woman who have held the role of Lord Lieutenant and the sometimes turbulent times in Berkshire.
